 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Angelic Kids Foundation was started in 2015 by Evangelist Joash Ndege to provide access to education, shelter, food and other basic needs to the hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children residing in Huruma slum. The institution started to operate with one classroom and ten children and currently has 102 learners from kindergarten class to grade three.

Vision

Provide a safe space that can offer as many under privileged children as possible access to education and empower them with skills to enable them live a dignified livelihoods

Mission

To empower marginalized children and youth with formal education, vocational skills, rehabilitation as well as counseling so as to improve their socio economic status and make them contribute meaningfully in national development.

Current Activities

Angelic Kinds Foundation currently operate a school in Madoya Village, Huruma slums. The school only admits children from the underprivileged families otherwise known as orphans and vulnerable children (OVC’S). The school which has a kindergarten section with three levels, and a lower primary section with grades one to three is housed in a temporary iron sheet structure. Apart from academics, children at the school also receive guidance and counseling especially those who are affected by HIV/AIDS. The school feeding program provides a meal a day every school day while co- curricular activities such as debates, educational tours, arts, and music and talent development ensure that the child’s development is all rounded.

Statement of need

An Oxfam GB 2010 report states that a quarter of Nairobi’s population of 4 million inhabitants live in informal settlements or slums which lack social amenities such as health services, water and sanitation as well as adequate schools. The government of Kenya does not feel obliged to provide social amenities in these settlements since they are non-formal in nature and as such lack government recognition. For a population of over 300,000 residents, Huruma location has only four public primary school.

But several barriers still hinder children from slum villages from accessing primary public schools. Despite primary education in public schools being declared free officially, hidden costs still make it unaffordable for slum residents. The other barrier is hunger. According to UNICEF, hunger is a major contributor of children dropping out of school while schools where meals are provided show an increase in admission, retention and completion rates. Children learning at angelic come from severely poor homes. Their guardians earn less than 2 dollars per day which places them below the poverty line and most can only afford a meal a day which is mostly supper. There is thus a high risk of their dropping out of school. The other challenge is lack of course materials such as text books. There is an urgent need to provide new text books which reflect the new curriculum introduced by the government in 2018.

Angelic Kids Foundation exists to provide quality and holistic education to the destitute children of Madoya slum, Huruma location. However, our efforts are hampered by lack of adequate funding to provide meals in the school as well as course text books. We thus request for a grant of ksh 1,058,753 to help us launch our “Food and Books Keep Kids in School” proposal.

PROGRAM SCOPE

Program Description

The program aims at providing a meal a day for the 102 learners at Angelic Kids Foundation School. They will receive well balanced lunches comprising of rice, beans, maize and vegetables. These will help prevent malnourishment, help them in their physical development and also prevent hunger and thus retain them in school and lead to improved grades. The program shall also equip the school with new course text books which reflect recent changes in the curriculum. This will increase the ratio of text book to children to 1:1.Currently only the teachers have text books and this creates problems with issuing home work to the learners. Finally the intervention intends to provide every student with one pair of complete school uniform to replace the worn out ones.

Target population

The beneficiaries are orphans and vulnerable children learning at Angelic Kids Foundation School. Most live in Madoya village, Huruma slum location and come from homes headed by single mothers who earn less than 2 U.S dollars per day.

Target Area

The intervention targets children who come from Madoya slum village and other villages in Huruma with severe rates of poverty.

Issues to be addressed

  1. Poor  concentration in class, low academic grades, absenteeism and drop outs due to hunger

  2. Drop in quality of education due to lack of text books in the school. Text book to student ratio should be 1:1. Yet for many subjects the only text book available is the teachers copy leading to a ratio of 1 text book for 16 learners.

  3. Low self-esteem amongst learners due to torn uniform
