 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Angelic Kids Foundation was started in 2015 by Evangelist Joash Ndege to provide access to girls’ education, shelter, food and other basic needs to the hundreds of thousands who are orphans and vulnerable children residing in Mathare slum. The institution started to operate with one classroom and ten children and currently has 102 learners.

Vision

Provide a safe space that can offer as many under privileged girl-children as possible access to engineering education and empower them with skills to enable them live a dignified livelihoods

Mission

To empower marginalized girls-children and youth with engineering education, vocational skills, rehabilitation as well as counseling so as to improve their socio economic status and make them contribute meaningfully in national development.

Current Activities

Angelic Kinds Foundation currently runs a centre in Madoya Village, Mathare slums. The centre only admits girl-children from underprivileged families otherwise known as orphans and vulnerable children (OVC’S). The centre which has a kindergarten section with three levels and a lower primary section with grades one to three is housed in a temporary iron sheet structure. Apart from academics, children at the school also receive guidance and counseling especially those who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

Statement of need

An Oxfam GB 2010 report states that a quarter of Nairobi’s population of 4 million inhabitants live in informal settlements or slums which lack social amenities such as health services, water and sanitation as well as adequate schools. The government of Kenya does not feel obliged to provide social amenities in these settlements since they are non-formal in nature and as such lack government recognition. For a population of over 300,000 residents, Huruma location has only four public primary school.

But several barriers still hinder children from slum villages from accessing even primary public schools. Despite primary education in public schools being declared free officially, hidden costs still make it unaffordable for slum residents. The other barrier is hunger. According to UNICEF, hunger is a major contributor of children dropping out of school while schools where meals are provided show an increase in admission, retention and completion rates. Children learning at angelic come from severely poor homes. Their guardians earn less than 2 dollars per day which places them below the poverty line and most can only afford a meal a day which is mostly supper. There is thus a high risk of their dropping out of school. The other challenge is lack of course materials such as text books.

Angelic Kids Foundation exists to provide quality and holistic engineering-education to the destitute children of Mathare location. However, our efforts are hampered by lack of adequate funding to secure engineering-tools as well as course text books. We thus request for a grant of ksh 19500USD to help us launch our “Engineering course work” proposal.

PROGRAM SCOPE

Program Description

The program aims at providing engineering-skills for over 102 learners at Angelic Kids Foundation Centre.

Issues to be addressed

  1. Girl child school drop out

  2. Girl child talents nurture

  3. Girl child self employment

  4. Girl child labor, pregnancy & early marriage

  5. Female Genital Mutilation

Overall goal

The overall goal is to increase retention, increment and completion rates of girl-children in Angelic training programs and also improve the quality of education.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION (M&E)

A participatory M&E approach where the donor, project staff and project beneficiaries are involved shall be used. The program coordinator/Director and staff members submit monthly, quarterly and end of project reports then can meet to discuss the report and determine whether adjustments to project content, instruction or execution, and activities are needed and the implementation of such adjustments. The report will then be submitted to the donor and donor staff invited on the ground for M&E purposes.

ORGANIZATION CAPACITY

Angelic Kids Foundation has the required capacity to carry out the “Engineering girls-courses in school” program. The Director and other staff have been running the organization for four years and are a focused and dedicated team. There is also an experienced program coordinator on the ground who shall ensure that the objectives of “Girls engineering courses” in school are met. The organization is legally registered to carry out its mandate and has an operating bank account.

Sustainability

Upon full implementation, the small tuition raised from the project would be used to establish another engineering course of Agribusiness to enhance income generation to purchase additional tools and cater for repair and maintenance.

We seek to be self reliant upon full implementation of the project which would tae one to two weeks upon funding.
